Needless Suffering: How Society Fails Those With Chronic Pain |
|
If you are one of the 100 million Americans with chronic pain, if you are a family member of someone with chronic pain, a health care provider, or anyone whose job brings you in contact with those who suffer ---- this website is for you.
For over 28 years I have been caring for patients who suffer from chronic pain. In taking care of those who suffer, advocating for them at the political level, and studying the phenomenon of chronic pain from the bio-psycho-social perspective, I have come to understand how our culture inadequately cares for those in pain.
My goals are:
For over 28 years I have been caring for patients who suffer from chronic pain. In taking care of those who suffer, advocating for them at the political level, and studying the phenomenon of chronic pain from the bio-psycho-social perspective, I have come to understand how our culture inadequately cares for those in pain.
My goals are:
- To inform: Each month, I will share my thoughts about an aspect of pain management. I wish to not only share what we know, but also what we do not know. It is my impression that a serious lack of honesty pervades the practice of pain management; we promise much more than we can deliver.
- To present the good, the bad, and the ugly about how we manage pain in our society: Too often discussion about pain dwells on the negative. We are going to highlight the positive. There are many inspiring people who have thrived despite their pain, and there are many heroic individuals who have helped them. It is my hope their stories will inspire you to do your best despite your limitations.
- To de-stigmatize chronic pain: Too often those who suffer are ostracized by their families, workplaces, friends, insurers, health providers and others due to lack of knowledge and understanding.
- To give those with chronic pain a voice to facilitate a constructive dialogue. Perspectives can only change when individuals share. In addition to my monthly posts, guest blogger posts will add to our knowledge bank.
- To change how society treats those in pain: My primary aim is to elevate dialog that will enact change at all levels of our society, from living room to Washington!
Welcome!!! I look forward to our journey together.
